Pakistan batsman Khushdil Shah will miss the first Test against England after being ruled out for up to three weeks with a fractured left thumb.

The left-hander suffered the injury while batting on Saturday during a training session in Derby.

He is not, therefore, taking part in the group’s ongoing four-day intra-squad practice match, nor will he take part in the upcoming warmup game that will begin on July 24.

It is hoped that he will return to training by the end of next week.

Abid Ali, meanwhile, has shown no signs of concussion after being struck on the head on Sunday while fielding at short-leg on the third day of the practice game. He was hit near the badge on his helmet by a flick from Haider Ali off the bowling of Mohammad Abbas.

He has also undergone a precautionary CT scan, which returned no abnormal results. It was decided that he would sit out the remainder of the game, which is in its final day, returning to training on Wednesday – Tuesday is a squad rest day.

Pakistan team doctor, Dr Sohail Saleem, said: “Abid is absolutely fine and will be available to resume training on Wednesday following Tuesday’s rest day. He underwent a precautionary CT scan which has also returned normal.”
