Jofra Archer has been ruled out of the second Test between India and England in Chennai after having an injection in his right elbow.

The fast bowler felt discomfort during his side’s 227-run win in the first Test at the same venue.

The issue is not related to any previous injury and England’s medical staff hope that treatment will allow the condition to settle down quickly, permitting Archer to return to action in time for the third Test – a day-night match in Ahmedabad.

Archer has previously suffered a stress fracture of his right elbow, an injury that forced him out of much of England’s series victory in South Africa a year ago.

The 25-year-old was a key part of England’s success in Chennai, dismissing both of India’s opening batsmen in the first innings, before subjecting Ravichandran Ashwin to a hostile barrage of short balls. He dismissed Jasprit Bumrah on the final afternoon to seal a famous win.

In his absence, England have several options but might be inclined to turn to Olly Stone as the most similar in pace. Alternatively, Chris Silverwood and Joe Root could be tempted to reunite James Anderson and Stuart Broad for the first time this winter.
