Sydney Thunder captain Jason Sangha faces missing the rest of the Big Bash League after suffering a broken collarbone.

The 23-year-old picked up the injury while fielding during the defeat to Melbourne Renegades on Sunday (December 18).

An X-ray has confirmed a fractured left clavicle. Sangha has returned home and a specialist is expected to confirm the recovery timeline.

"Our thoughts are with Jason. He’s a big part of this team as captain and an even bigger part as a batter," said stand-in captain Chris Green said.

"We saw what he did last year in his damaging role in the top order. He’s a key to our batting line-up.

"The squad is thinking of him at this time because any injury is tough."

Thunder are already without legspinner Tanveer Sangha currently sidelined with a lower-back stress fracture which the team hope he can recover from in time for the sharp end of the competition.

It has been a troubling start to the campaign for Thunder. They opened with a victory over Melbourne Stars but then recorded the lowest men's T20 score of 15 to lose by 124 runs to Adelaide Strikers.

Sunday's defeat to Renegades was by four wickets with a single delivery remaining.

The news is not much better for Stars, who have lost batter Jos Burns for the remainder of the BBL.

The Australian opener tore his hamstring in the opening game against Thunder and was forced to retire hurt.

Though he will not require surgery, Stars - who are already without captain Glenn Maxwell - have been forced to add James Seymour to their squad as an injury replacement player.
