George will take on the position of chief correspondent at The Cricketer, expanding on his previous columnist role at the magazine to provide monthly analysis and opinion on the England setup, the county game and beyond
The Cricketer is delighted to announce that George Dobell will be joining the editorial team on a full-time basis from November 15.
George is one of the most trusted and accomplished cricket journalists worldwide, with more than two decades of experience setting the news agenda, affecting change and entertaining his readers with characteristic dry wit and scything insight.
After starting his career with The Cricketer, George went into regional journalism with the Birmingham Post before establishing himself at ESPNcricinfo, working his way up to become senior correspondent.
He will take on the position of chief correspondent at The Cricketer, expanding on his previous columnist role at the magazine to provide monthly analysis and opinion on the England setup, the county game and beyond.
The Cricketer Magazine editor, Huw Turbervill, said: “George is a must-read cricket writer: punchy, colourful, opinionated, knowledgeable and informed. He is one of the best ‘people’ journalists I have encountered. His contacts book is bulging.
“I have known him for two decades. He was one of the most welcoming, helpful and engaging people you’d meet in a press box. I brought him in as a columnist a few years ago. He was perfect for us. He loves county cricket. He knows the game inside out. I cannot tell you how excited I am that he is joining our team.”
George will also take on the lead reporting role for our rapidly expanding digital arm, further bolstering a desk which has won the ECB Outstanding Coverage of Domestic Cricket award for each of the past three years.
He will tour with the England Test side, including to Australia this winter for the long-awaited Ashes trip, and provide much of the same coverage his audience has come to expect across written, audio and video platforms.
George’s arrival is part of a further considerable investment in cricket journalism by The Cricketer, as the company seeks to establish itself as the go-to outlet for fans of the English game.
A further announcement about the future direction of The Cricketer’s digital journalism will come in December.
The Cricketer’s digital editor, Sam Morshead, said: “George’s arrival is a huge indicator of the ambition everyone at The Cricketer shares to develop our editorial platforms with the reader in mind.
“George is a rare blend: a wonderful writer, a well-connected journalist, and an empathetic human being. I have long admired his capacity to break a story and pen an engaging opinion piece, and am really very excited to begin working with him on a day-to-day basis.
“The Cricketer’s digital platforms have come a long way in a short time but we are only just getting started, and George’s arrival will play a big role in helping us achieve our lofty goals.”
George said: “Joining The Cricketer feels like coming home. I started my career at the magazine about 25-years ago and I’m hugely flattered they see me as part of their vision for the future.
“I feel very comfortable with their values: their love of cricket at every level; their respect for the past but their understanding of the need to evolve. And they seem happy for me to keep asking awkward questions of those running our great game.
“It feels like a really good fit and I can’t wait to join the fantastic team they already have in place.”
