Gary Kirsten has been confirmed as the coach of the Cardiff-based franchise in the men's Hundred.

Former South Africa international Kirsten will take over the side which is expected to be named Western Fire in time for the competition's inaugural season in 2020.

Kirsten has plenty of coaching experience in the shortest format, having held roles in the Big Bash and IPL, as well as spending time in charge of the Proteas and the Indian men's national side.

The corresponding women's team in the western region will be overseen by Matthew Mott.

Mott, the Australia women's coach since 2015, spent three seasons at Glamorgan earlier in his career.

"To be involved in English and Welsh cricket from a coaching perspective is something that I have never done. It’s great to be given that opportunity and to come to Cardiff," Kirsten said.

"This is a new format that I am sure will grow and grow. The real win is that it will grab the attention of families and expose the game of cricket to as many environments and communities as possible."
