The second edition of the European Cricket League has been postponed until 2022 due to the uncertainty regarding the Covid-19 pandemic.

Scheduled to begin on May 30, the T10 league would have seen over 300 players and officials from 16 champion clubs and 15 different countries descend on Spain for the four week tournament.

However, due to Covid-19, the decision has been taken to postpone the tournament for a second consecutive year.

The ECL was last staged in 2019 when VOC Rotterdam won the eight-team league at the La Manga Club.

"The turnaround in the situation has not happened swiftly enough for an international event with this many teams and players competing at one venue," said ECL founder Daniel Weston.

Seeing is believing: European cricket's grand revival

"Unfortunately, we continue to be confronted with a health and well-being situation that hampers our chances to hold the ECL and elevate the game to a higher level. The strict restrictions on PCR testing, travel concerns and quarantines being enforced make it impossible to plan. Therefore, we now have to take a deep breath, postpone again, and set our sights on 2022."

Hailed as 'the Champions League of European cricket', ECL22 is expected to be an expanded 30 team tournament, with league champions from Jersey, Guernsey, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic, Portugal, Bulgaria, Malta, Turkey, Cyprus, Croatia and Greece taking part for the first time. Two more participating countries are still to be confirmed.

ECL22 will take place over seven weeks at Malaga’s Cartama Oval, starting with six weeks of group matches from February 7, 2022 and culminating in a finals weeks from March 21-25.
