After suffering a first ODI series defeat for five years to Australia, the head coach has no concerns over the drive of his squad
Eoin Morgan: English summer has shown world "exactly how to get cricket back on"
Chris Silverwood, the England head coach, has no concerns over the determination of his side as they started on the road to the defence of their 50-over world title with a first one-day international series defeat for five years.
The three-wicket defeat in the third ODI against Australia at Emirates Old Trafford condemned the hosts to a first bilateral series defeat in the format since 2015 when they were rolled by the same opponent.
The challenge facing England is to become just the second nation to successfully defend the World Cup when they go to India in 2023. Silverwood is confident the drive remains to build the foundations for that campaign over the coming years, despite an early setback.
"The passion is still there, the desire is still there. It will come from within," said the coach.
"The wicket for the first two games was a difficult wicket, it's not the type of wicket that we're used to playing on and the expansive game that we do. That was a different challenge for us.
"It certainly wasn't through lack of effort or lack of passion to get out there and score runs. Coming into this game the guys were as determined as ever to perform.
"I don't think we have performed at our best, there are a few more gears in there for us. And you've got to push to strive to improve because I think we've got to keep pushing boundaries.
A partnership for the ages to bring a thrilling series to its close... ENGLAND V AUSTRALIA TALKING POINTS
"The last thing I want is for the guys to go into their shell, I want them to come out of it a bit more. If we get pushed we want to push back harder and we want to break records. We'll keep trying to create that environment."
Many of the squad, including Eoin Morgan, Jofra Archer, and Jos Buttler, now emerge from a whole summer inside the bio-secure bubble to travel to the United Arab Emirates for the Indian Premier League, where conditions are similar.
England are due to head to South Africa in November and December for a white-ball tour, before facing India and Sri Lanka in the new year.
Silverwood is happy to see his players head to the franchise competition, but will keep an eye on their physical and mental well-being.
"It is their decision really," he explained. "The contracts are good for them. Looking forward we have a T20 World Cup coming up. The more high-class T20 they can play the experienced that can get into them can only be a good thing for us.
"The one thing I can encourage is they keep talking to us and make sure they don't burn out as well so we have to keep an eye on them from that point of view."
