The Cricketer wraps up the best of the action on day one of the fifth round of LV= Insurance County Championship matches in 2023
The Ageas Bowl (first day of four): Hampshire 229, Warwickshire 82-0 - Warwickshire trail by 147 runs with 10 wickets remaining
James Vince continued his fine form with an unbeaten 75 but Hampshire collapsed to give Warwickshire the best of day one at the Ageas Bowl.
Hampshire captain Vince scored a stunning 186 in the victory over Northamptonshire last month and looked untroubled in the face of a challenging visiting attack.
Chris Woakes and Chris Rushworth both claimed three wickets each, with Oliver Hannon-Dalby and Ed Barnard supplementing them in Pakistani overseas Hasan Ali’s rested absence.
Their successes provided Hampshire’s downfall as they slipped from 83 for 1 to 109 for 6 before being bowled out for 229.
In response, Warwickshire reached 82 without loss at close, with Alex Davies leading the charge with 46 not out.

Trent Bridge (first day of four): Lancashire 214, Nottinghamshire 119-5 - Nottinghamshire trail by 105 runs with five wickets remaining
England fast bowlers Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson faced each other in LV= Insurance County Championship action for the first time in five years yet it was Brett Hutton who was the dominant figure with ball in hand on a day of 15 wickets at Trent Bridge.
Hutton finished with 5 for 66 as Lancashire were dismissed for 214 inside 45 overs after being asked to bat first on what looked a bowler-friendly pitch, although the home side have work to do if they are to secure a first-innings lead.
After John Bohannon's 68 was supplemented by an unbeaten 48 by Tom Bailey late in the innings, Nottinghamshire were 119 for 5 when bad light brought an early close, of which Haseeb Hameed had made 57 not out.
Broad took 2 for 41 and another England bowler Olly Stone 2 for 58 in the Lancashire innings. Anderson has sent down just seven overs in the contest so far and is yet to take a wicket.

Taunton (first day of four): Northamptonshire 137-4, Somerset
Ricardo Vasconcelos made the best of a bad situation to register a notable half century and keep Northants afloat on the first day of the LV=County Championship match against Somerset at the Cooper Associates Ground at Taunton.
On a day when the First Division's bottom two teams sought the reassurance that only positive progress can provide, they were frustrated by the rain that rolled off the Quantock Hills and ensured only 37.4 overs were possible.
Without a win in three outings this season, Somerset won the toss and elected to bowl on a green-tinged pitch, and Northants, still without a batting bonus point in 2023, reached 137 for 4 before the elements closed in to force a premature cessation of hostilities.

Chelmsford (first day of four): Essex 314, Surrey 1-0 - Surrey trail by 313 runs with 10 wickets remaining
Gus Atkinson claimed career-best bowling figures as he sliced through the Essex batting and wrested the initiative back Surrey's way on the first day of the LV= Insurance County Championship match at Chelmsford.
The 25-year-old seamer, called in to replace rested leading wicket-taker Dan Worrall for only his 10th first-class appearance, claimed the prized scalp of Sir Alastair Cook among his maiden five-wicket haul to finish with figures of 6 for 68.
Essex had looked comfortable taking first use of a flat track under light cloud cover when Cook and Nick Browne put on 62 at a run-a-minute for the first wicket, and Tom Westley and Matt Critchley added 114 for the fourth wicket in 34 overs. Cook (51), Westley (62) and Critchley (60) all made hay before a mid-innings collapse in the face of a swinging ball in late afternoon.
The reigning county champions had been toiling before Atkinson and spinner Will Jacks (2 for 24) combined to reduce Essex from 218 for 3 to 241 for 7 inside seven overs with three wickets falling in just 13 deliveries. Only a breezy ninth-wicket stand of 62 between Simon Harmer and Sam Cook enabled Essex to become the first team to take 300 runs off Surrey's attack this season.
Surrey openers Rory Burns and Dom Sibley survived two lively overs from Jamie Porter and Harmer before the close to reduce Essex's advantage by one run.
