Australia beat England by 72 runs to wrap up the series win with one game to spare. The Cricketer takes a look at the performances of each player at the SCG...

ENGLAND

Jason Roy (DNB & 0): Out second ball, touching through to Alex Carey. His bad luck continues. 2

Phil Salt (DNB & 23): Unfazed by the early wickets, taking on Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, but a reckless dismissal. 3.5

Dawid Malan (DNB & 0): Little he could about Starc's outswinger. 2

James Vince (DNB & 60): Good, positive batting to drag England back into the contest. Loves batting in Sydney. 7

Sam Billings (DNB & 71): Quick thinking to stump Carey and tidy on the whole. Impressed with the bat, taking time to get in before dominating Australia for a spell in the middle overs. 7.5

Moeen Ali (1-24 & 10): Brought himself on in the powerplay and struck with his second ball to remove Warner. Crash, bang and out with the bat - not particularly helpful in the grand scheme of things. 4.5

Chris Woakes (2-42 & 7): Nice variations, outsmarting both Travis Head and Marcus Stoinis, and looked dangerous whenever he had ball in hand. Little of note with the bat. 6.5

Sam Curran (0-55 & 0): Not his best outing. Started well but punished at the death. Needless swipe at Adam Zampa with the bat. 3

Liam Dawson (0-48 & 20): Another unhelpful pitch but mixed up his speeds nicely. Very economical and helped England wrestle back control in the middle overs. Showed some fight with the bat. 7

David Willey (2-44 & 6): Bowled nicely in all three phases and deserved a couple of wickets. Another of Starc's victims with the bat. 6

Adil Rashid (3-57 & 3*): One expensive over aside, another good day for Adil Rashid, who controlled the middle period and picked up three big wickets - Marnus Labuschagne, Carey and Steve Smith - with his trickery. 7.5

AUSTRALIA

David Warner (16 & DNB): Another positive start but undone by Moeen Ali. 3.5

Travis Head (19 & DNB): Like Warner, started positively but couldn't kick on, falling to a clever piece of England bowling (this time from Woakes). 3.5

Steve Smith (94 & DNB): Another textbook Steve Smith knock, well and truly back to his best. 9

Marnus Labuschagne (58 & DNB): Aggressive half-century to re-energise Australia after a brief lull and an excellent partnership with Smith. Disappointing dismissal but showed what he can offer with the white ball. 7.5

Alex Carey (0 & DNB): Out sweeping, as Billings predicted. Solid behind the stumps. 4

Mitchell Marsh (50 & 0-12): Brisk half-century - his first since September 2020 - but couldn't kick on at the death as the pitch got harder to bat on. 7

Marcus Stoinis (13 & 0-29): Tried to smack everything, didn't really come off. Conceded just two boundaries in five overs with the ball. 5

Ashton Agar (18* & 0-41): Did the job at No.8, taking the final over for 16 runs. Wicketless once again but did bowled well enough. 7

Mitchell Starc (0 & 4-47): Aggressive intent with the bat and connected nicely but picked out Woakes. Had England in all kinds of trouble with the ball. 9

Adam Zampa (0* & 4-45): A valuable nought, running hard with Agar at the death. Highly impressive with the ball, derailing England with the big wickets of Billings and Moeen. 9

Josh Hazlewood (DNB & 2-33): A winning captaincy debut and two crucial wickets, halting Salt in his tracks early on before kickstarting the chaos by removing Vince. Sensible bowling changes. 8.5
