Sussex have confirmed the departure of Aaron Thomason from the club, following the expiry of his contract.

The allrounder, 24, joined Sussex in 2019 after leaving Warwickshire midway through the season, and scored 619 first-class runs from 16 games for the south coast county, at an average of 21.34. He also played in nine T20s for the Sharks, in which he made 89 runs, including a top score of 47.

The Birmingham-born right-hander had not appeared in Sussex colours since a Championship fixture against Glamorgan on 4 July, where he made four and one, and has since turned out twice for Cambridgeshire in the National Counties Championship.

Sussex performance director Keith Greenfield said: “We’d like to thank Thommo for his efforts while at Sussex and wish him all the best in whatever he does next. We’ll keep in touch and, like all former players, he’ll always be welcome at Hove.”

Thomason has found most success in the shortest form of the game. He has played 37 T20s in his career, scoring 325 runs at a strike rate of 125, while also claiming 24 wickets at an average of 27.91.

Sussex finished bottom of Division Three in the County Championship, as they prioritised the development of academy prospects in red-ball cricket, and reached the semi-finals of the Vitality Blast, before being knocked out by Kent Spitfires.
