India's bright start to their home Cricket World Cup has suffered a setback following an ankle injury to allrounder Hardik Pandya during the clash with Bangladesh in Pune.

The 30-year-old appeared to turn his left ankle during his follow-through while bowling in the ninth over of The Tigers' innings after they chose to bat first.

In clear discomfort from the outset, Hardik was attended to by a medic on the outfield, who administered some strapping before he returned to his feet.

But after attempting a practice run he admitted defeat and accompanied the trainer to the India dressing room.

The 1983 and 2011 champions later confirmed Hardik would not return to the field during the Bangladesh innings and had been sent for a scan to determine the full extent of the damage.

If deemed fit enough to bat in the reply he would be eligible to return to the field after 120 minutes of the chase or after five wickets have fallen, due to having suffered the issue during the game.

Virat Kohli, bowling in a one-day international for the first time since August 2017, took the remaining three deliveries of the over to much acclaim.

Despite his role providing balance to the India line-up, Hardik's prowess with the ball has defined his outings during the Cricket World Cup. His three previous outings saw him take five wickets at 22.60.

Required just once with the bat, he struck an unbeaten 11 to secure a handsome opening-round win over Australia in Chennai.
