Lauderhill deluge leaves Sri Lanka on the brink as Nepal clash is abandoned

Incessant rain, with a flash flood warning in place, meant no play was possible at Central Broward Regional Park Stadium, leaving both nations winless and facing a tricky task to reach the Super 8s

Lauderhill: Nepal v Sri Lanka - match abandoned

Nepal and Sri Lanka's difficult task of qualifying for the Super 8s has been further complicated by their Group D match being abandoned without a ball being bowled in Lauderhill.

Continuous rain at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium - local flash flood warnings were in place - saw large puddles form on the outfield and around the boundary rope.

Groundstaff had until 22.48pm local time to prepare the ground for a five-over game (the minimum length match permitted in the playing regulations during the group stage) but conditions did not relent.

A decision was made shortly after an inspection at 8.30pm local time.

Inclement weather is also predicted in patches across the remainder of the week and could leave the remainder of the schedule under threat. The next game at the venue sees USA face Ireland in a pivotal game in Group A.

The outcome sees Nepal and Sri Lanka pick up their first point of the competition each, but it does little for their chances of progressing to the Super 8s.

Nepal, who are set to have spinner Sandeep Lamichhane available when they move to the Caribbean for their remaining matches, face South Africa (June 15) and Bangladesh (June 17) needing victories in both and for other results to go their way.

If indeed they were successful, the Netherlands losing their remaining games would be enough to progress.

The situation facing 2014 champions Sri Lanka is even graver.

Victory over the Dutch in their final match on Monday (June 17) would lift them onto three points but to qualify they'd need another washout prior to that when Bangladesh take on Netherlands in Kingstown on Thursday (June 14), as well as a dramatic shift in net run rate.

Table-toppers South Africa are now the first nation to book their place in the next phase, having claimed a three successive win over Bangladesh by four runs in New York on Monday (June 10).
