New York: USA 110-8, India 111-3 - India win by seven wickets

Arshdeep Singh's four wickets set the tone for India to earn a third straight win at the T20 World Cup, beating co-hosts United States by seven wickets despite a fine, battling display from Aaron Jones' side.

Arshdeep, the left-arm seamer, dismissed Shayan Jahangir with the first ball of the match and had Andries Gous caught at mid-off in the same over on his way to figures of 4 for 9 in four overs.

Nitish Kumar (27) led a spirited response with a classy cameo from No.5, while Steven Taylor battled for 24 in 30 deliveries as the American side churned out a 110-run total on home soil in Nassau County.

India, who have now qualified for the Super Eight stage, were well represented in the stands, and that total was never likely to be enough against a world-class batting lineup, particularly after Corey Anderson was brilliantly caught by Rishabh Pant, chasing a high catch to square leg as the former New Zealand allrounder looked to put his foot on the accelerator.

They also managed the significant achievement of taking Jasprit Bumrah for 25 runs in four wicketless overs, a feat in itself, while there were five sixes in an innings that – on a difficult surface and a slow outfield – did well not to collapse after its horror start.

They could briefly dream of a famous victory as well, with Virat Kohli edging behind to the excellent Saurabh Netravalkar for a first-ball duck and Rohit Sharma chipping a leading edge to mid-off.

India were 10 for 2 in the third over, before Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav put together an important stand for the third wicket. But Pant (18) was cleaned up by Ali Khan, opening the door once again.

Yadav found a willing ally, though, in Shivam Dube, and the pair gradually whittled down the target in the face of wily bowling on another tough New York pitch and clever captaincy. Dube hit Anderson for an enormous six over midwicket shortly after Yadav had been dropped over his shoulder at short third by Netravalkar, and USA were subject to a five-run penalty for falling foul of the stop-clock three times.

From then on, India were clinical, winning by seven wickets. They were given a stern test by the hosts, who still have qualification for the Supe Eight phase in their own hands.
