Former Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir has taken aim at current skipper Eoin Morgan's tactics during the Indian Premier League defeat to Royal Challengers Bangalore.

KKR made an impressive start to the game as Varun Chakravarthy claimed two wickets in the second over, first as Rahul Tripathi caught Virat Kohli (5) and then when he bowled Rajat Patidar (0).

But the 29-year-old didn't return until the eighth over before bowling the 12th and 14th against a free-flowing Glenn Maxwell and AB de Villiers.

Chakravarthy went for 24 from those 12 deliveries as RCB went on a late charge, which eventually saw them made 204 for 4 from their 20 overs.

Maxwell hit 78 fropm 49 balls and De Villers powered 76 off 34 balls.

Gambhir, a veteran of 154 IPL outings including 129 as captain, was fuming with Morgan's decision to hold back Chakravarthy and allow RCB a way back into the contest.

"That is probably the worse, weird kind of captaincy I have ever seen in my life," Gambhir, whose former side went down by 38 runs, told Star Sports.

"Someone taking two wickets in his first over and then doesn't get to bowl the next over. You could have actually sealed the game in the first six overs.

"Had Varun Chakravarthy got his third wicket or had he got Glenn Maxwell out in the first six overs, this game would have been over there and then.

"I'm happy an Indian captain didn't make that blunder because a lot of people would have got their daggers out had an Indian captain made that call.

"That is the most ridiculous captaincy I have ever seen. I can't explain that."
