The Blackcaps spinner went unsold during last month's player auction after two years representing the franchise
New Zealand spinner Ish Sodhi will join Rajasthan Royals in a support role for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League after going unsold in last month's player auction.
Sodhi, who made eight appearances for the Royals across the past two IPL campaigns, had entered the auction with a base price of INR 75 lakh (£80,000) but attracted no bids for his playing services.
However, the franchise has today announced that the 27-year-old will return in two off-field capacities during this year's tournament, work as a consultant alongside spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule as well as in operations under chief operating officer Jake Lush McCrum.
Sodhi joins a coaching staff that will be led by Australia assistant coach Andrew McDonald, who was appointed to the role in October. Steve Smith is set to captain a side featuring returning England regulars Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Jofra Archer, while Jaydev Unadkat and Robin Uthappa were among their most expensive signings on auction day.
"Having played for two seasons for the Royals, I have formed a great level of understanding with all the people involved with the franchise, and they have always been very supportive of me," Sodhi said.
"Therefore, I did not have to think twice when this opportunity was offered to me by the Royals management. I love this franchise and want to help us win the IPL this year.
"It is a fascinating opportunity for me to be involved in the coaching staff at such a young age, while also supporting and learning about the operations of the business."
Lush McCrum added: "He is one of the most positive and motivational people I have ever met, has incredible knowledge of spin bowling and already has a really strong relationship with [squad spinners] Shreyas Gopal and Riyan Parag.
"While Ish will add a lot of value in the development of the now large spin bowling department, we also want to develop him in an operational role within the franchise. This will be of great support to us, in addition to strengthening Ish's overall management skillset."
