Punjab Kings take on Mumbai Indians in the 17th match of the 2021 IPL.
The game is scheduled for 7.30pm IST (3pm BST) on Friday, April 23, 2021.
Chennai's M. A. Chidambaram Stadium is hosting its penultimate game of the competition.
Punjab Kings sank to their third defeat in a row as they were turned over by nine wickets by the winless Sunrisers Hyderabad.
It was probably the most insipid display of any side in the IPL thus far, as Kings were dismissed for 120, a target which their opponents eased towards with nine balls remaining.
Mumbai Indians have begun attempts to claim a sixth title in uncertain fashion, having won two and lost two of their opening four. Last time out, in a repeat of last year's final, they were beaten by Delhi Capitals by six wickets after the lower-order failed to fire with the bat.
Back in Chennai, where turn is likely to again be a factor, MI will have to show greater patience but they'll fancy returning to winning ways against the bottom franchise in the table.
Dafabet have Mumbai Indians as big favourites for this one, at 1/2 to win. Kings are available as outsiders at 6/4.
Those odds are reflected in the powerplay runs market, with the defending champions 3/4 to score the most runs in the first six overs. You can back Kings at 6/5.
In the battle for the biggest opening partnership, MI's Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock are 10/11 to come out on top. KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal are meanwhile 19/20 to prevail.
Hardik Pandya was superb for India in the England white-ball matches but the combination of some poor batting and a shoulder problem which has prevented him from bowling means MI are yet to benefit from his talent in 2021.
Jasprit Bumrah sat out those matches and has yet to establish his best form since returning to competitive action. His return of 4-0-32-1 won't cause too much concern but he'll be eager for an improvement.
KL Rahul went to 5,000 runs against Sunrisers and though he made little progress thereafter his progress appears to be vital to Kings' success. Deepak Hooda has proved his ability to go big from the off and if he can hang around for a sustained period he has the capacity to make quick runs.
Though it has been far from an ideal start to the competition for the five-time winners, they are unlikely to make major changes to their line-up.
The same may not be true of Kings, who are likely to make major changes to their XI. Chris Gayle and Nicholas Pooran are under threat and Dawid Malan is likely to come in for his first appearance in the competition.
Jhye Richardson and Riley Meredith will be eager to reclaim their places and Chris Jordan could come into consideration as an effective death bowler who can hit the ball a long way.
The two teams have played each other 26 times.
Mumbai Indians wins: 14
Punjab Kings wins: 12
Though some afternoon rain is expected in Chennai, the skies are likely to have cleared in time for the match. Temperatures are expected to rest around 31 degrees Celcius with around a nine per cent chance of the rain returning.
No, this match will be played behind closed doors owing to the Covid-19 situation in India.
Rohit Sharma's side have not yet hit their straps after two defeats in the first four but they face Kings at just the right time. Expect a win for the holders.
