Australia have called up uncapped seamer Mark Steketee as an injury replacement for Michael Neser for the upcoming Test series in Pakistan.

Neser, 31, picked up a side strain playing for Queensland in the Marsh Cup against New South Wales and was only able to get through one legal delivery in the match.

He injured himself in the mid-innings warm-up at The Gabba and though he managed two balls with the new ball - the second was a wide - was soon forced to leave the field.

As a result, another uncapped quick Brendan Doggett and Sean Abbott have been placed on standby for the series.

Steketee received his maiden call-up for the eventually-postponed Test series in South Africa last year and was also part of the enlarged Ashes squad.

With 29 wickets at 16.31 in five matches, the 28-year-old is the leading wicket-taker in the Sheffield Shield this season.

Though Jhye Richardson is being left at home as a precautionary measure, Australia are taking a full-strength attack for their first Tests since Justin Langer's resignation.

Speaking prior to news of the call-up, Steketee said he was thankful to be under consideration, having initially been named as a reserve for the series.

"It's obviously nice to know that (I'm) still in and around that squad," he said.

"They bowled beautifully throughout the summer, anyone that came in bowled really well – Jhye, Ness and (Scott) Boland did exceptionally well.

"It's a tough side to crack into at the moment but that's how it should be, that's what makes Australian cricket strong."
