A hip problem has ruled the batsman out of the Boxing Day clash at Centurion with CSA considering who to call up in his place
Temba Bavuma will miss South Africa's Boxing Day Test against England with a hip injury.
The 29-year-old has suffered a hip flexor muscle strain and will sit out the first match of the series, though it is hoped he can return later in the series.
Cricket South Africa are considering whether to call-up a replacement to their squad, which already includes six uncapped players.
"Temba Bavuma presented with clinical features of a left hip flexor strain," CSA Chief Medical Officer - Dr Shuaib Manjra said.
"A scan done yesterday confirmed a Grade 1 strain of one of the hip flexor muscles.
"Temba will commence his rehabilitation program with a goal of returning to play in seven to 10 days' time."
In 39 Tests, Bavuma has scored 1,821 runs at 31.24, with one century and 13 fifties.
