West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel left the field gingerly for treatment on the first afternoon of the second Test at Emirates Old Trafford.

The seamer, playing back-to-back Tests after taking nine wickets at the Ageas Bowl in his side’s four-wicket win last week, opened the bowling but looked out of sorts in his initial salvo.

He improved as the day wore on but having bowled seven wicketless overs at a cost of 17 runs, he left the field hobbling, with any discomfort seemingly stemming from a muscular issue on his right leg.

Joe Root and Dominic Sibley were at the crease for England at the time, putting together a recovery after the losses of Rory Burns and Zak Crawley in consecutive deliveries to Roston Chase, who bowled the final over of a shortened morning session, which began late due to early rain.

West Indies went into the game with an unchanged line-up, meaning that Kemar Roach, Jason Holder and Alzarri Joseph were all also in action again. Rahkeem Cornwall and Chemar Holder both remained on the sidelines after Gabriel’s man of the match display in Southampton.

Gabriel later returned to the game, and to the Windies attack, but was nowhere near as threatening as during his first-Test salvo.
