Sanath Jayasuriya will take charge of the Sri Lanka team during their tour of England this summer.

The former Sri Lankan captain will take over as interim head coach of the team following the resignation of former England coach, Chris Silverwood.

The CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket, Ashley De Silva, said: "Sanath with his wealth of international cricketing experience is well positioned to guide the national team until we find a permanent solution."

The left-hander scored 6,973 runs in 110 Test matches for his county.

Silverwood was the coach for two years after he permanently replaced Mickey Arthur, who is now Derbyshire's head of cricket.

In a statement after resigning, Silverwood said: "It has been a real honour for me to be part of Sri Lanka Cricket and I will be taking away many fond memories."

Jayasuriya was previously the chief selector and has held the role of 'cricket consultant' of Sri Lanka Cricket but will now lead the team for the three Test matches later this year.

The Test series begins on August 21 at Old Trafford before heading to London for two more matches. The first at Lord's on August 29 and the final game at The Oval on September 6.
