Russell Domingo has resigned as head coach of Bangladesh.

The 48-year-old South African spent three years in the role after being appointed as Steve Rhodes' replacement in August 2019. He was due to lead the national side until at least the 2023 Cricket World Cup.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, BCB cricket operation chair, Jalal Yunus, confirmed Domingo's departure: "He sent his resignation letter yesterday [Tuesday] and that is with immediate effect."

Hinting at changes following Bangladesh's Test defeat against India earlier in December, Yunus also told reporters: "We need a coach who has an impact and influence on the team. You will soon see some changes. We are trying.

"We want a very strong team that can play quality and highly competitive team. We went close to beating India but it is tough to beat this team. We beat England and Australia in this ground, but India is a tougher side in these conditions.

"In the mainstream, motivation is important. We don't just want a good coach, but he has to be a mentor. There's less scope to teach them skills at this level, but the coach needs to review performances with the players after a series."

Under Domingo, Bangladesh lost 17 of their 22 Test matches but did defeat New Zealand by eight wickets in Mount Maunganui at the start of this year, in addition to twice recording victories over Zimbabwe.

With the white-ball, they won 21 ODIs from a possible 30, including series wins over West Indies (twice), Sri Lanka, India and South Africa, and 23 T20Is from 59 matches. However, he was already taking a back seat in the latter format, with Sridharan Sriram calling the shots at the 2022 T20 World Cup.

At major tournaments, the Tigers failed to win a single match in the Super 12s at the 2021 T20 World Cup, finishing in sixth position in Group 1, but were much improved 12 months later. Despite finishing in fifth position in Group 2 in the Super 12s, they defeated the Netherlands and Zimbabwe, ran both India and Pakistan close, and were only two points off a spot in the semi-finals.

At the 2022 Asia Cup, however, they lost to both Sri Lanka and Afghanistan to crash out in the first round.

Domingo finished his tenure with a 2-0 Test series defeat against India.
