Rishabh Pant stable after traumatic car accident

Rishabh Pant, the India wicketkeeper-batter, is being treated for multiple injuries after being involved in a serious car accident on Friday (December 30).

The episode unfolded as the 25-year-old was driving towards Roorkee, Uttarakhand.

According to local police, Pant's car struck a divider and caught fire. He was taken immediately to a private hospital in Roorkee before being moved to Max Hospital, Dehradun.

He said to be in a stable condition while being treated for two cuts to the head, a right knee ligament tear as well as injuries to his right wrist, ankle, toe and back.

"We are still examining him," said Dr Dishant Yagnik, medical superintendent at Max Hospital.

"He is stable at the moment, there doesn't appear to be cause for major worry. Once the evaluation is complete, we will put out a detailed bulletin.

"He is conscious, and he is talking, and the doctors are examining wherever he is saying there is discomfort. Orthopaedics and plastic surgeons are looking at him right now. And we are examining for any internal injuries."

A BCCI statement confirming the full extent of Pant's injuries, read: "The BCCI is in constant touch with Rishabh's family while the medical team is in close contact with the doctors currently treating Rishabh.

"The board will see to it that Rishabh receives the best possible medical care and gets all the support he needs to come out of this traumatic phase."

Pant has played 33 Tests, 30 one-day internationals and 66 T20Is for India.

He was involved in the recent 2-0 Test series victory over Bangladesh, scoring 93 to help clinch victory in Mirpur.

India's next assignment is a six-match white-ball tour at home to Sri Lanka, though Pant was not selected for either announced squad earlier this week.

Messages have support have flooded in for Pant on Twitter as details regarding the incident unfolded. Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting wrote on Twitter: "Thinking of @RishabhPant17. Hope you're on the mend and back on your feet soon.

India teammate Virat Kohli said: "Get well soon @RishabhPant17. Praying for your recovery."

Pakistan allrounder Shoaib Malik commented: "Just came to know about Rishabh Pant's accident in India. Sending many prayers and wishes for you @RishabhPant17. Wishing you a speedy recovery, get well soon brother."

England batter Jonny Bairstow added: "Speedy recovery @RishabhPant17 never nice to see people in accidents but relieved he's stable and at the hospital! For now I think now people should let him rest and recover in private!"
