Marnus Labuschagne has risen to the top of the ICC Test batting rankings for the first time.

Labuschagne's performances in the ongoing Ashes campaign have helped lift him above Joe Root to the summit despite the England captain breaking the national record for most Test runs in a calendar year.

The Aussie No.3 has 912 rating points, topping Root's 897.

His international teammate, Steve Smith, sits third while Kane Williamson and Rohit Sharma complete the front five.

Australia have half of the top six batsmen in the world in Test cricket, according to the rankings, with David Warner rounding off an impressive return.

Labuschagne, who benefited from Smith's concussion at Lord's in 2019 to get his chance in the Australia side and has never looked back, has scored the majority of his runs in the format at home.

Australia have not played a Test on foreign soil since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

His overall Test record now shows 2,113 runs at an average of 62.14.
