Scorecard

ENGLAND

Jason Roy (60): Bullied the Sri Lankan bowlers from the off as the platform for a successful chase. After a meagre English summer in 50-over cricket last year, this was encouraging. 7

Jonny Bairstow (29): A little below his relentless best, but still shared in another partnership of susbtance for the first wicket with Roy to set the scene. A drop behind the stumps - but to the toughest of chances. 5

Joe Root (68*): Stylish. Classy. Unbothered. The 50-over run machine keeps churning them out. 8

Eoin Morgan (75*): A very impressive first ODI half-century in six knocks for the skipper, even against an admittedly limited attack. 8

Sam Billings (DNB): A catch in the deep. Otherwise very quiet. 5

Moeen Ali (DNB & DNB): Not required with bat or ball. Very hard to score as a result. 5

Jason Roy in action

Sam Curran (DNB & 5-48): Scythed through the Sri Lankan top order with pitched-up bowling early, then swapped to skiddy bouncers to complete his first ODI five-for. 8.5

Tom Curran (DNB & 0-43): Rattled through his overs without appearing to cause the batsmen too many problems. 6

David Willey (DNB & 4-64): The most expensive of England’s bowlers but found a way to take wickets: surprisingly, with the bouncer. 7

Mark Wood (DNB & 0-35): Got up good speed once again, and saw one difficult chance spilled by Bairstow behind the stumps. Sri Lanka struggled to find ways to take him for runs. 7

Adil Rashid (DNB & 0-50): Sri Lanka dealt with the legspinner’s threat well. 5

SRI LANKA

Pathum Nissaka (5): Bowled through the gate by a fairly regulation delivery from Sam Curran, which may have swung a touch. Disappointing dismissal for a top-order international batsman. 2

Kusal Perera (0): The captain could not lead by example this time around, pinned on the crease. High, but on the back leg, the ball was destined for the stumps. A review brought three reds. 2

Avishka Fernando (2): Took a gigantic stride across his stumps second ball, missed it, was plumb lbw and wasted his team’s second review. 1

Dhananjaya de Silva (91 & 0-10): Crucial, combative, and classy innings from the No.4, who mixed aggression with game-management to haul his country out of a hole. 8.5

Charith Asalanka (3): Never got started before slicing a pull to midwicket, having come onto the shot really late. 2

Dhanajaya de Silva played a pivotal role for Sri Lanka

Wanindu Hasaranga (26 & 1-46): Offered some support to Dhananjaya and played a couple of elegant drives through the covers before slapping a bumper into the deep. Claimed the wicket of Bairstow but the most expensive of Sri Lanka's bowlers. 5.5

Dasun Shanaka (47): Took over from Dhananjaya in keeping Sri Lanka going at a reasonable tempo. 7

Chamika Karunaratne (21 & 1-34): A watchful knock, playing second fiddle to Shanaka, before nicking Curran to Bairstow attempting to pull. Had Roy caught pulling. 6

Binura Fernando (17 & 0-53): Useful late runs with the bat. Didn't look like making inroads into England's batting lineup. 5

Dushmantha Chameera (14* & 0-46): A cameo late in the innings. Disciplined rather than incisive with the ball. 6

Asitha Fernando (1* & 0-54): Like his teammates, simply did not have enough for the hosts' stellar top four. 5
