India v England: Kuldeep Yadav and Yashasvi Jaiswal compound the tourists' pain

A fourth five-wicket haul for the wrist-spinner saw England collapse to 218 all out before Jaiswal crushed a fine half-century to leave India in complete control of the fifth Test

Dharamsala (day one of five): England 218, India 135-1 - India are 83 runs behind with nine first-innings wickets remaining

India matched the charming surroundings in Dharamsala with a word-perfect display to deflate England on day one of the fifth Test.

Already trailing 3-1 in the series, the tourists were dismissed for a paltry 218 shortly after tea - their lowest first-innings score of the tour.

Kuldeep Yadav led the way with 5 for 72 while Ravichandran Ashwin took care of the tail with 4 for 51 in his 100th Test.

And as they have throughout, India pressed home their advantage as Yashasvi Jaiswal crushed a fourth Test fifty while bringing up 1,000 runs in the format.

By the close, the deficit was just 83 runs with captain Rohit Sharma unbeaten on 52.

Though trailing by an unassailable lead, this was one of England's poorest days of the Ben Stokes-Brendon McCullum era.

It didn't even end with a 700th wicket for James Anderson, whose four-over spell went without reward.

Shoaib Bashir did clip India's wings with the dismissal of Jaiswal but it only acted as temporary rest bite.

Having chosen to bat first England survived early movement for Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj and reached lunch 100 for 2 with Zak Crawley well set.

But they were unprepared for the Indian surge following the interval. Kuldeep removed the Kent batter for 79, triggering a loss of eight wickets for just 46 runs.

The left-arm wrist-spinner also picked up Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root and Ben Stokes to collect a fourth Test five-for.

Ashwin then got in on the act as England were all out for 218 shortly after the tea break.

A significant chunk was taken out of that total, first by a typically breezy innings from Jaiswal that included five four and three sixes off Bashir, and then Rohit Sharma who struck two of his own off Mark Wood and Tom Hartley on his way to an 18th Test fifty.

Scoring at 4.50 an over meant that India closed to within 83 runs of England, who may now be fearing the worst.
