A replacement for Brook, who has scored 1,181 runs at 62.15 in 12 Tests, is yet to be confirmed
Harry Brook is returning home from England's Test tour of India for personal reasons.
While an initial statement from the ECB indicated he had withdrawn from the squad, stating "he will not be returning to India", it is now understood he could rejoin the team later in the series.
His replacement is yet to be confirmed.
England's 16-strong squad had been in the UAE preparing for the series and were due to arrive in Hyderabad on January 21. The first Test is scheduled to begin on January 25.

The ECB said: "Harry Brook is set to return home with immediate effect for personal reasons from the England Men's Test tour of India.
"The Brook family respectfully requests privacy during this time. In light of this, the ECB and the family kindly request the media and the public to respect their wish for privacy and refrain from intruding on their private space."
Brook has made 12 Test appearances for England, scoring 1,181 runs at 62.15, including four centuries and seven half-centuries.
England currently have a Lions squad in India for a three-match red-ball series against India A and could look to that group for Brook's replacement. Opener Keaton Jennings scored 154 and 64 in the first unofficial Test while Josh Bohannon and Alex Lees scored a century and a half-century, respectively.
