The vice-captain will be absent for the one-day international and Test series against the Kiwis, leaving the BCCI with a dilemma over his replacement
India will be without Rohit Sharma for the remainder of the tour of New Zealand due to a calf injury.
The opener suffered the problem during the fifth T20 against the Kiwis and was forced to retire hurt on 60.
Subsequent examinations have revealed that the blow is sufficient for Sharma to miss the remainder of the schedule, which includes three one-day internationals and two Tests.
Mayank Agarwal has been enlisted for the white-ball matches, scheduled for Hamilton, Auckland and Tauranga on February 5, 8 and 11.
But the selectors face a dilemma over who will come in for the Tests which begin on February 20 in Wellington and Christchurch on February 28, when the squad is announced.
Replacements are likely to come from the India A tour which is currently in New Zealand, with Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill among the options.
Twenty-year-old Gill is the front-runner having scored 83 and an unbeaten 204 against New Zealand A in the first unofficial Test in Christchurch, a match in which Shaw did not feature.
Hardik Pandya has already been ruled out of the rest of the tour due to his ongoing recovery from a back problem. Seamer Ishant Sharma is a possible doubt having suffered an ankle tear during the Ranji Trophy.
