Rishabh Pant has declared his knee ligament surgery a success in his first public comments since he survived a horrific car wreck in December.

Pant's vehicle flipped over and caught fire while he was travelling to visit his mother on December 30. Police in the nothern state of Uttarakhand later said the India international "dozed off" at the wheel.

The 25-year-old sustained various injuries, including damage to his knee which, despite the subsequent operations, is likely to rule him out of most of the year.

He will definitely sit out the Indian Premier League and could well be absent from the home 50-over World Cup in October and November.

"I am humbled and grateful for all the support and good wishes," he wrote on Twitter on Monday (January 16).

"I am glad to let you know that my surgery was a success. The road to recovery has begun and I am ready for the challenges ahead.

"I may not have been able to thank everyone individually, but I must acknowledge these two heroes who helped me during my accident and ensured I got to the hospital safely. Rajat Kumar and Nishu Kumar, thank you. I'll be forever grateful and indebted.

"From the bottom of my heart, I also would like to thank all my fans, team-mates, doctors and the physios for your kind words and encouragement. Looking forward to see you all on the field."

Pant was airlifted to Mumbai for the surgery on his right knee, after initially receiving treatment locally to the crash site.

The cost of that transfer was covered by the BCCI. Pant thanked the BCCI, its secretary Jay Shah, and the government for their support in his tweets on Monday.
