INDIA

Rohit Sharma (122*): Absolutely magnificent at the top of the order, pacing his innings to perfection and making batting look simple on a difficult deck against a menacing seam attack. Dropped after passing three figures. 9

Shikhar Dhawan (8): Did not get going before he nibbled at a testing line from Rabada, edging through to De Kock. 3

Virat Kohli (18): Found the going just as tough as every other batsman at the Hampshire Bowl. Victim to a tremendous De Kock catch. Took two of his own in the field. 4.5

KL Rahul (26): Scratched around in a partnership of 85 with Sharma before chipping a simple catch to mid-off. 5

Kedar Jadhav (DNB & 0-16): A filler role with the ball. Didn't bat. 6

MS Dhoni (34): An able foil in the chase, as he has so often been down the years. Did not need to score quickly and bided his time, which was just what was required. Keeping was a little erratic. 6

The joy of Jasprit: Bumrah casts a spell on South Africa

Hardik Pandya (15*& 0-31): Rattled Du Plessis with a rising delivery which forced the bat from the South Africa captain's hands and left him needing treatment. 6

Bhuvneshwar Kumar (DNB & 2-44): Economical, if not quite as eye-catching as Chahal and Bumrah. Claimed the wickets of Morris and Tahir at the end. 7

Kuldeep Yadav (DNB & 1-46): Disciplined and difficult to get away without enjoying the cluster of wickets that his spin partner Chahal managed. 7

Yuzvendra Chahal (DNB & 4-51): Flummoxed the South African top order with his variations, keeping a lid on any possible scoring areas until the lower order swung from the hip against him. 8.5

Jasprit Bumrah (DNB & 2-35): Magnificent with the new ball, getting it to whoop through the air and wiggle off the seam. You would not want to be the batsman. 9

Rohit Sharma made runs for India

SOUTH AFRICA

Hashim Amla (6): Looked uncomfortable throughout his brief stay at the crease before edging Bumrah to second slip. 3

Quinton de Kock (10): Totally dominated by Bumrah, struggling to find a way to combat the movement in the air and off the wicket. Claimed a sensational catch to dislodge Kohli. 4

Faf du Plessis (38): A fragile start against Bumrah, struck on the finger by a rising delivery from Pandya but then settled and briefly rebuilt with Van der Dussen. Beaten by a peach of a slider by Chahal. 5

Rassie van der Dussen (22): Looked assured, just as he has for most of his short international career, only to flunk a reverse sweep and get bowled around his legs by Chahal. 3.5

David Miller (31): Another South African batsman to get set and then go. Caught and bowled by Chahal, and it was a tame return catch, too. Spilled one of the simplest catches you're likely to see spilled in World Cup competition. 4

WORLD CUP PORTAL: Your one-stop shop for the summer spectacular

JP Duminy (3): Failed to pick Chahal, failed to pick Kuldeep, dismissed cheaply. 3

Andile Phehlukwayo (34 & 1-40): Took the attack to India’s bowlers with some reward before he trotted down the pitch and took a swipe at thin air. Looked dangerous at times with ball in hand. 6.5

Chris Morris (42 & 3-36): Showed his top order what was possible by refusing to be bowed by the Indian pressure. Extraordinarily miserly with the ball, until his final over, with a remarkable three maidens against one of the most potent batting units in world cricket. His is the most economical 10-over contribution in this World Cup. Managed to hold onto a catch while taking out all three stumps, too. 8.5

Kagiso Rabada (31 & 2-39): A PB in one-day international cricket with the bat. Quick, aggressive and very difficult to deal with in his first spell with the ball, causing India's top three plenty of problems. 8.5

Imran Tahir (0 & 0-58): Could not make a breakthrough and went wicketless for the first time in the tournament. 5

Tabraiz Shamsi (DNB & 0-54): Was not able to make the same impact as either of India's wristspinners. 5
