India remain hopeful Jasprit Bumrah will be fit for the T20 World Cup despite reports a back injury will keep him out of the tournament.

The 28-year-old was withdrawn from the squad ahead of the second and third T20Is against South Africa with a back injury.

Bumrah had recently returned against Australia from an injury to the same area, which forced him to miss the Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

PTI quoted a BCCI source claiming the fast bowler would be absent for six months with a stress fracture, ending his World Cup hopes.

But India are remaining optimistic. He continues to be assessed at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru with a final decision expected next week.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly told Xtra Time: "Bumrah is not out of the World Cup yet. So, let's see what happens.

"Fingers crossed, yes. I don't know, we'll find out in the next two or three days. Don't rule him out yet."

Head coach Rahul Dravid is refused to rule out Bumrah - Mohammed Siraj was his replacement - who has 70 T20I wickets and an economy rate of 6.62.

"As of now, officially he has been ruled out of the T20 series against South Africa," said Dravid. "He has gone to the NCA and we are waiting for an official confirmation on the next steps.

"We will see what happens in the next two to three days but once we get an official confirmation, then we will be able to share that."

He added: "I don't go deeply into the medical reports, I rely on the experts to tell me what it is.

"They ruled him out of this series and he is being assessed. You will know in due course what happens in the future.

"Till the time he is not officially ruled out, we will always be hopeful and we will hope for the best."

India fly to Australia on October 6 and will play warm-up games against the hosts and New Zealand ahead of the main tournament. Their campaign begins on October 23 against Pakistan in Melbourne.
