Fixture: South East Stars v Thunder

Venue: Beckenham

Date: Saturday, September 18, 2021

Start time: 10:30

What’s the lowdown?

South East Stars sit in fourth place, with three wins and three losses to their name, but are some nine points off third-placed Central Sparks.

After a disappointing 115-run defeat by the Sparks last week, they will be looking to regroup and see off the travelling Thunder.

The away side have won just twice in the Rachel Heyhoe Flint Trophy thus far. Only Sunrisers, who have lost all six of their fixtures, are below them in the table.

Form is not on their side, having lost their last three matches on the bounce, but they have the quality to set that right against the Stars.

Who should I watch out for?

Alice Capsey has been a sensation this summer. Having only turned 17 a month ago, Capsey excelled for Oval Invincibles in The Hundred, and has been in superb touch of late.

A 78 against Lightning and 26 versus Sparks have been her last two scores: and that’s before taking her useful off-breaks into account too. The Stars will be looking for another all-round performance from her.

For Thunder, Georgie Boyce is worth keeping an eye on. The opener hit 67 against Northern Diamonds last week, and will be keen to rack up some more runs against the Stars.

With the ball, Alex Hartley has been in decent touch. Her left-arm spin will undoubtedly come in handy.

What’s the team news?

Stars will be without Sophia Dunkley, Tash Farrant and Freya Davies, who are on England duty for their ODI series against New Zealand. For Thunder, Kate Cross and Sophie Ecclestone miss out for the same reason.

Emma Lamb broke a finger in last week’s fixture against the Diamonds and is ruled out.

Northern Diamonds squad: Hollie Armitage, Sterre Kalis, Leah Dobson, Bess Heath, Beth Langston, Linsey Smith, Phoebe Graham, Ella Telford, Ami Campbell, Rachel Hopkins

Thunder squad: Emma Lamb, Georgie Boyce, Ellie Threlkeld, Seren Smale, Nat Brown, Laura Marshall, Laura Jackson, Alice Dyson, Alex Hartley, Hannah Jones, Daisy Mullan

Prediction?

South East Stars have been the superior side across the duration of the competition, and it’s hard to envisage them slipping up here, particularly if Emma Lamb is unfit to play for Thunder. South East Stars win.
