Hampshire batsman Joe Weatherley has signed a contract extension, ensuring he remains at the Ageas Bowl through to at least the end of the 2022 season.

The opener, who came through the county’s development pathway, made his senior debut in 2016 and has since become a permanent fixture.

The 24-year-old recorded his first hundreds for the club in 2018, winning the Royal London Cup in the same year.

And although his 2019 campaign was ruined by an ankle injury, the former England Under-19s batsman returned in the shortened 2020 season with 263 runs in the Bob Willis Trophy.

“It’s an absolute honour to continue to play for my boyhood club and I’m excited about the future here at Hampshire,” he said.

“I can’t wait to contribute to future team success and be back playing in front of our members and supporters again soon.”

Giles White, Hampshire’s director of cricket, added: “It’s been great to see Joe’s development in recent seasons. He has become an important member of the squad and has an excellent attitude and grasp of his game.

“We fully expect him to continue his progress and become a player capable of match-defining innings across all formats for Hampshire. We look forward to seeing this in the coming seasons.”
