Umpire hit on head by ball in Pembrokeshire County Division Two match dies

An 80-year-old umpire who was hit on the head during a Pembrokeshire County Division Two match last month has died, Pembroke County Cricket Club have confirmed.

John Williams, from Hundleton, was officiating in a match between Pembroke and Narbeth on Saturday, July 13 when he was struck by the ball.

He was flown to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff and placed in an induced coma.

On August 1 Mr Williams, who was also the secretary of nearby Hundleton County Cricket Club, was transferred to Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest, but died two weeks later.

Pembrokeshire Cricket tweeted: "Sad news this morning regarding umpire John Williams.

"John passed away this morning with his family at his bedside. Thoughts of all of Pembrokeshire Cricket are with Hilary and the boys at this difficult and sad time."

Glamorgan offered their condolences to the club on the same platform, saying: "Our condolences go out to John's family and friends, from everyone at Glamorgan Cricket."
