South Wingfield's Liam Mitchell took 36 off Ockbrook and Borrowash legspinner Jamaal Sadiq's over but his side still fell 20-run shorts of their target of 162
A batsman playing in the Derbyshire County Cricket League hit six sixes off an over in the quarter-final of the Jackson Cup on Wednesday night.
Liam Mitchell, batting for South Wingfield Cricket Club, hit 36 off Ockbrook and Borrowash Cricket Club’s Jamaal Sadiq’s over.
The feat, which came in the 14th over, however came in vain as South Wingfield failed to chase down the 162 set by Ockbrook and Borrowash, who progressed to the semi-finals with a 20-run victory.
Mitchell said: "It was a bit of a whirlwind really. Once I had got to the third ball I thought I might as well go for it. The first two balls he dropped short so I hit those two, and then the third I did exactly the same. We never looked like winning the game at this stage, so it was just a bit out of the blue. It was all a bit surreal.
"Once I had done it I thought we could win the game, but it is still a bit surreal now. It is one of those things that doesn't happen very often, so I just enjoyed it.
"I have thought before that I could [hit six sixes]. I have got close but I have never done it before. I have definitely hit four sixes in an over but it is not something I thought I definitely needed to do in my career.
"But given that the opportunity arose it was a nice thing to do."
However, despite his fine achievement, Mitchell could not see his team home as he was dismissed for 61 by Dylan Buckthorp.
"That was the discussion we had in the middle [to try and chase the score down].
"We needed 50 off the last five overs at that stage so we thought 'let’s try and go for it now and see what happens', but I hit one more six next ball and then got out the following ball so it didn’t really work very well!"
