Australia opener Cameron Bancroft has admitted to tampering with the ball at Cape Town.

The opener was seen on camera to remove an object from his pocket before working on the ball. He then concealed the item in question down his trousers.

Bancroft has subsequently admitted his offence with captain Steve Smith confirming he knew about the attempt to manipulate the ball.

Smith said: "The leadership group knew about it... not proud of what’s happened.

"It’s certainly not on and it won’t happen again under my leadership."

Asked if he felt pressured into his actions, Bancroft said: "I was in the vicinity of the area when the leadership group were discussing it... I’ll be honest, I was nervous about it.

"I’m not proud of what happened at all."

Smith says he is not considering resigning as captain.

"I still think I’m the right person for the job. I need to take control of the ship. This is certainly something I’m not proud of. I’m embarrassed to be sitting here talking about this."
