Every game in the 2021 Caribbean Premier League is being held at Warner Park on St Kitts, in an effort to minimise the Covid-19 risk to the tournament.
After not losing a single game in 2020, Trinbago Knight Riders were defeated in their first outing of this year's competition.
Knight Riders were unable to chase down Guyana Amazon Warriors' total of 142 for 7, scrambling to 133 for 9 to lose by nine runs.
Barbados Royals also suffered a defeat in their first outing of 2021, failing to chase down St Kitts & Nevis Patriots' total of 175 for 5. Jason Holder's side finished on 154 for 7 to lose by 21 runs.
Trinbago Knight Riders lost their CPL opener to Guyana Amazon Warriors
Sunil Narine is among the most accomplished T20 allrounders of all time and he began the tournament in excellent form, taking 2 for 17 from four overs against Guyana.
His fellow spinner Akeal Hosein returned identical figures and on a surface which is only likely to slow as the competition goes on, these two could be crucial to Trinbago's chances.
With the bat, none of the Trinbago line-up got beyond 28 on Thursday and will be desperate for an improved showing on Friday.
Barbados Royals batsman Glenn Phillips is ranked 17th in the T20 Player Index and has a terrific Caribbean Premier League record, having scored 1,323 runs for Jamaica Tallawahs.
