Shaun Marsh confirms state cricket retirement

The Australia and Western Australia left-hander played 183 first-class matches, which included 38 Tests, and 177 more in List A cricket. He will honour the final year of his Big Bash League deal with Melbourne Renegades

Shaun Marsh has called time on his state cricket career after 22 years at the top.

Four months out from turning 40, the left-hander steps aside from the first-class and one-day games as Western Australia's all-time leading scorer across formats with 12,811 runs.

He played 38 Tests for Australia, scoring 2,265 runs including six centuries, and featured in 73 one-day internationals. In 2017/18 he was part of the squad that reclaimed the Ashes.

"Even though it's been a really difficult decision to make I know it's the right call," he said.

"I've been speaking with [my wife] Bec a fair bit about it and obviously dad and my brother as well and I knew deep down inside of me it was the right decision to make.

"It's been an amazing journey, never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd be here for 22 years."

He added: "As I said to the guys this morning, I couldn't come into training anymore and look them in the eyes and say that I'm 100 per cent committed to what we wanted to achieve."

Marsh has not fully stepped away from the game with a year remaining on his Melbourne Renegades contract, but the announcement is the end of his lengthy state and international career.

It began aged 17 years and 236 days when he debuted against South Australia during the 2000/01 campaign.

A multiple Marsh One-Day Cup winner, he secured an elusive Sheffield Shield in 2022. The two preceding years saw him named the men's domestic player of the year.

Injury has limited his involvement in 2022/23, making just a single outing for WA last month having agreed to stay on for another year.

Effective immediately, it means Marsh will not be involved in the remainder of the Sheffield Shield as WA go for back-to-back titles.
