5 moments that shaped the Ashes
It was a topsy-turvy series with some memorable performances throughout. We pick 5 key clashes that led to Test victories.
1. Haddin drops Root at Cardiff
England were reeling at 43 for 3 in the 15th over of the first Test in Cardiff when Joe Root joined the uneasy Gary Ballance in the middle after a red-hot Test and one-day international series against NZ.
Root just managed to avoid a first-ball lbw dismissal after getting a thin edge to the ball before behind hit on the back foot, bang in front. The newly-appointed England vice-captain looked to jam his bat down to block his second ball, a full inswinger from Mitchell Starc, but could only outside edge behind. Veteran Aussie 'keeper Haddin dived one-handed to his right, but despite getting a full hand to the ball he couldn't hold on and Root was given a lifeline that he grasped with two hands.
Root not only went on to score 134 but invigorated his Yorkshire teammate Ballance on their way to a partnership of 153. England posted 430 in their first innings and won the game by 169 runs. Haddin was immediately dropped and may not play for Australian again.
It could have been so very different.
