JP Duminy will remain with Paarl Rocks in a mentorship role after being ruled out of the Mzansi Super League through injury.

The former South Africa allrounder, who retired from representing the Proteas after this summer’s World Cup, has partially torn his hamstring.

The team’s captain, international skipper Faf du Plessis, admitted the absence of South Africa’s top T20I run-scorer would be a blow to his side’s chances, explaining: “JP brings a lot of value in a lot of different areas. His experience will be missed, especially by the younger guys.”

On his new role, however, Duminy added: “This was one tournament I was looking forward to play in this year, particularly after missing out last year due to injury.

“Playing with one of my best mates as well (Faf du Plessis), we've been talking the last month at how excited we were about playing together again.

“It's great to be still involved as a mentor for the team and there are lots of younger guys I feel I can assist. One of my biggest passions is team and business culture. To operate from that mindset and see how I can add value to the team culture and environment as well is a great opportunity.”

He will be joined in his new position by fellow former South Africa international Justin Ontong. The 39-year-old, who is also the Proteas’ fielding coach, has joined Rocks in a similar role.
