Hamstring surgery rules Jhye Richardson out of Mumbai Indians stint

The Australian fast bowler will miss the IPL after a hamstring issue resurfaced; it is also likely that he will miss the Ashes series in England

Australia fast bowler Jhye Richardson has been ruled out of the upcoming Indian Premier League after undergoing surgery on his hamstring.

The blow also likely ends his chances of competing for an Ashes berth in the summer.

Richardson first suffered the injury during this year's Big Bash while playing for Perth Scorchers, but a recurrence of that issue ruled him out of Western Australia's appearance in the Marsh Cup final and the ODIs between India and Australia that follow the culmination of their Test series.

"Injuries are a big part of cricket, that's a fact," Richardson tweeted. "Frustrating? Absolutely.

"But I'm now in a scenario where I can get back to doing what I love and work bloody hard to become an even better player than before. One step back, two steps forward. Let's do this."

Richardson, 26, had been set to represent Mumbai Indians in the IPL, having before been with Punjab Kings.

Richardson was previously ruled out of the 2019 Ashes series after undergoing surgery on a shoulder problem, which also kept him out of the same year's World Cup.

He hasn't played Test cricket since a heel issue that flared up during the Ashes Test at Adelaide in December 2021, where he took a match-winning five-wicket haul.
