Greg Barclay re-elected as ICC chair

The New Zealander has served since November 2020 and won the race for re-election when Tavengwa Mukuhlani withdrew his candidacy

Greg Barclay has been re-elected as ICC chair for a second two-year term.

The New Zealander, who replaced then-interim chairman Imran Khwaja in November 2020, was unopposed following the withdrawal of Tavengwa Mukuhlani, chair of Zimbabwe Cricket, at an ICC board meeting in Melbourne.

Barclay was widely expected to beat Mukuhlani, with a simple majority all that was required. Among Barclay's backers were the BCCI, represented by Jay Shah, the secretary of India's national governing body, who has been named as head of the ICC's finance and commercial affairs committee.

"Over the last two years we have made significant strides forward with the launch of our global growth strategy that provides clear direction to build a successful and sustainable future for our sport," said Barclay, a commercial lawyer who previously served as chair of New Zealand Cricket.

He added: "It is an exciting time to be involved in cricket and I look forward to continuing to work closely with our members to strengthen the game in our core markets as well as grow it beyond that, ensuring more of the world can enjoy cricket."

"I would like to congratulate Greg on his re-appointment as ICC chair," said Mukuhlani, withdrawing his candidacy, "as the continuity his leadership will provide is in the best interests of the sport."

Barclay sparked controversy earlier in 2022 when he suggested that women's Test cricket wouldn't be "any part of the landscape moving forward to any real extent at all".

That comment was widely panned by figures within the women's game; then-England coach Lisa Keightley described his words as "disappointing to hear".
