Brendon McCullum is confident Kolkata Knight Riders captain Eoin Morgan will rediscover his best form after another failure with the bat in defeat to Punjab Kings in Dubai.

The England captain has failed to reach double figures since the tournament resumed last month, recording scores of 7, 8, 0 and 2 in the last four innings.

KKR slumped to their seventh defeat of the 2021 IPL after failing to defend 166 against Kings, having selected an unbalanced side with just four bowlers to help compensate for the lack of runs.

Despite staying in the fourth and final qualifying position for the playoffs, KKR's destiny is out of their hands heading into the final week of the group phase.

Morgan took over as Knight Riders skipper from Dinesh Karthik mid-way through last term, but the change has not had the desired effect with the team set to miss out on the knock-out stage for a third straight season.

He is on course for the poorest batting return of his IPL career, currently averaging 10.90 from 11 innings.

"He's one of our senior players," said McCullum. "He's one of our international batters and in his own head, he would have loved to contribute more runs.

"I think he's captained the side really well. But look, you want some more runs from him there's no doubt in there.

"You need runs from your overseas players and you particularly need in those key spots as well. I am confident he will come alright. Some guys are really going well."
