The 30-year-old returned from Hampshire in 2016 and is firmly the No.1 behind the stumps at Chelmsford
Adam Wheater has signed a contract extension with Essex that will keep him at Chelmsford until at least the end of the 2022 season.
The wicket-keeper batsman returned to the club from Hampshire in 2016, from which point the club have claimed two County Championship titles and the T20 Blast in the last three years.
Wheater is so far leading the batting averages for Essex in the Bob Willis Trophy with 50.20, with his highest score of 83 not out coming against Middlesex earlier in the week.
Essex head coach, Anthony McGrath said: “Adam is an experienced campaigner and has consistently shown his quality both behind the stumps and with the bat.
“He’s a great influence in the dressing room and always wants what’s best for the team, so I’m really pleased that he’s extended his stay."
