Harry Brook added to England ODI squad to face New Zealand

Harry Brook has been added to England's ODI squad ahead of their upcoming four-match series against New Zealand.

The 24-year-old, who has also been name in England's squad for the three-match ODI series against Ireland later in September, will provide batting cover.

Brook was a notable absentee from England's provisional 15-strong World Cup squad, which was announced in August.

He responded to the news with a number of eye-catching performances in The Hundred and the recently concluded T20I series against New Zealand, prompting calls for head coach Matthew Mott to reconsider his squad for England's title defence.

Recent uninspiring performances from the likes of Jason Roy, Dawid Malan and Liam Livingstone have added further fuel to the discussion.

Brook has only played 18 50-over matches, including three ODIs, across his career to date, with Mott citing his lack of experience in the format as playing a part in his non-selection.

However, speaking on September 5 ahead of the fourth T20I, Mott was keen to emphasise that the squad named in August has always been "provisional".

"I don't think anyone doubts Harry's ability," he said on Sky Sports. "There's a lot to play out before we pick that first XI against New Zealand in India and we've always said it's a provisional squad. Everyone will get a really good opportunity to show what they've got."

Brydon Carse also received a late call-up for the New Zealand ODI series, which is scheduled to begin on September 8 in Cardiff.
