New Zealand suffered two injury scares during England's innings in the fourth one-day international at Lord's.

Daryl Mitchell dislocated his left ring finger while taking the slip catch to dismiss Jonny Bairstow in the fifth over.

The allrounder took a low two-handed grab to dismiss the England opener off the bowling of Matt Henry for just 13 and soon left the field for treatment.

Finn Allen replaced him in the field, with the Black Caps later confirming the nature of the blow.

But he returned to the field for the 21st, easing any injury fears ahead of the World Cup, and was even able to bowl.

Injury struck again before Mitchell re-emerged as Tim Southee was hit on the right thumb while attempting to take a catch to dismiss Joe Root, who was dropped for a second time during his uncomfortable knock of 29.

The fast bowler threw himself to his right following a sharp edge off the bowling of Ben Lister but couldn't hold on, and looked in immediate discomfort. He has treatment on the field before returning to the dressing room.

"Tim Southee injured his right thumb attempting to take that catch and needs further assessment, at this stage he won't return to the field," a statement from the New Zealand camp said.

Left-arm seamer Trent Boult, rested after his sixth ODI five-for in the defeat at the Kia Oval, replaced the Test captain in the field.

Ben Lister, who is not part of the main group heading to India, pulled up with a hamstring injury while fielding the ball in the deep during the 36th over, meaning he was unable to add to his six overs with the ball. Lockie Ferguson acted as his replacement

New Zealand kick-off their World Cup campaign against defending champions England in Ahmedabad on October 5.
