Will Buttler's 'f**k it' note bring action from the ICC?

England's Jos Buttler and his note to himself

Jos Buttler could yet be pulled up by the ICC over his "f**k it" message on the top of his bat handle.

The England batsman earned the man-of-the-match award for his unbeaten 80 against Pakistan in the second Test at Headingley last week, during which TV cameras caught a glimpse of the hand written note.

Buttler, restored to the Test team this summer, explained that the motto helps him find the best state of mind to bat in but there is a chance the sport's governing body will not look kindly on it.

According to ICC regulations regarding clothing and equipment, "players and team officials shall not be permitted to wear, display or otherwise convey messages through arm bands or other items affixed to clothing or equipment unless approved in advance by both the player or team official's board and the ICC Cricket Operations Department ... the ICC shall have the final say in determining whether any such message is approved."

Buttler was in fine form at Headingley

It is unclear whether Buttler's note was approved by the ICC, though it seems unlikely.

Buttler said of the message to himself: "I think it's just something that reminds me of what my best mindset is – when I'm playing cricket, and probably in life as well," he said.

"It puts cricket in perspective. When you nick off, does it really matter?"

Meanwhile, the destructive batsman credited the Indian Premier League for helping him find the form he needed to win a recall to the England Test side.

"Those couple of weeks in the IPL gave me huge amounts of confidence - playing in front of those crowds, the pressure of being an overseas player," he said.

"The tough thing with Test cricket is that if you get out early, you've got a long time to think about it. In T20, you just move on."
