Paul Farbrace backs "outstanding" Ollie Robinson after England omission

Robinson has taken 27 wickets at 24.33 apiece for Sussex in Division Two so far this summer, the third-most in the second tier, helping his county to the top of the table after nine games

Paul Farbrace lauded Ollie Robinson after the seamer missed out on selection for the upcoming Test series against West Indies.

The Sussex head coach described Robinson as "outstanding" and declared that "the way he's bowled, other bowlers around the country must be good bowlers to be selected in front of him".

Uncapped seamers Dillon Pennington and Gus Atkinson were called up to Ben Stokes' side, as well as Chris Woakes, Matthew Potts and – for the first Test – James Anderson. Robinson, who featured once during the five-Test series in India – where he struggled with his back – wasn't called up.

He has taken 27 wickets at 24.33 apiece for Sussex in Division Two so far this summer, the third-most in the league. Crucially, for a bowler whose durability has often been questioned, only four seamers – James Harris, Ethan Bamber, Ryan Higgins and Ben Sanderson – have delivered more overs in the second tier.

"He's disappointed because he's been someone with an excellent record when he's played for England," Farbrace told the ECB Reporters Network. Robinson, for his travails, has taken 76 Test wickets at 22.92 apiece.

"It's a simple case of England wanting him to keep being consistent when he plays," added Farbrace. "He's been very consistent with us. The last month he's been outstanding, in red and white-ball cricket. His attitude has been spot-on. He's trained well, practised well, he's turned games for us as he did here in the first innings.

"Perhaps got off to an ordinary start, didn't quite get his line right to the left handers, and then came back and blew them away and took four-fer and gave us a 47-run lead. And this morning his two vital wickets clicked the game our way. He set us up to push on to victory."

Robinson, who has also been superb in this season's T20 Blast, took six wickets in the match as Sussex went further clear at the top of the table by winning at Wantage Road.

"In international cricket, England have got a lot of good players, they've made the call in terms of who they want to pick, and there's a lot of good players in and around the England team.

"But his record suggests he's a very good Test-match bowler. And what he's shown us in county cricket has been excellent. So, we've got no complaints on that point of view. We don't pick the England team; that's up to Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes to pick who they think is the right selection. We all want England to do well, and I'm sure Ollie will be highly motivated to push himself back into selection again."

Speaking on Monday, Rob Key, the managing director for England Men's cricket, said that he wanted "to see more of his best".

"There's a lot of bowlers around now and it's a competitive market," he explained. "There's been no conversation with him to say, 'You're done now'. He's just got to show us what he can do. Robinson is in the mix with Chris Woakes and Matthew Potts. He's got to get himself to the top of that list. He's got back, in the last couple of games, to his best. We just need to see that more often. And it's not a time to be taking your foot off the gas at all because there's some really good bowlers out there."
