England have been dealt a World Cup injury scare after Mark Wood pulled up during the warm-up clash with Australia in Southampton.

Wood was in the fourth over of his opening spell at the Hampshire Bowl when he stopped in his run-up.

The seamer attempted to complete the delivery for a second time but pulled up again, promptly returning to the pavilion for treatment.

His over was completed by Ben Stokes.

That Wood was able to jog off the pitch will give England some hope that the issue is not too serious but he has been sent for a precautionary scan on the problem area.

A spokesman said: “He is to have a precautionary scan. England’s medical team want to ensure there is nothing serious in the build up to the start of the World Cup.”

Wood has struggled with persistent injuries, mostly related his ankle and lower legs, over the course of recent years.

The concern over the Durham bowler follows a training incident on Friday which left Eoin Morgan with a "flake fracture" of his left index finger.

The captain expects to be fit for the World Cup opener against South Africa but was not included in the side that took to the field against Australia on Saturday.
