Jofra Archer has undergone surgery to address his longstanding elbow problem.
The fast bowler, who has been ruled out of England’s Test series against New Zealand because of the problem, received a cortisone injection in March to manage the injury.
However, he only bowled five overs during the second innings of Sussex’s LV= Insurance County Championship clash with Kent – his second match since the injection – after experiencing elbow pain, leading to his operation on Friday.
An ECB statement explained: “Archer will now commence an intensive rehabilitation period working with the ECB and Sussex medical teams. His progress will be reviewed by his consultant in approximately four weeks at which point further guidance will be provided as to when he can return to bowling.
“A further update will be given at the time.”
The 26-year-old, who has made 42 international appearances in all formats, has been plagued by elbow trouble for a long time, missing several matches during England’s tours of South Africa (2020) and India (2021).
Archer also missed the start of the domestic season to have an operation to remove glass from his hand after sustaining an injury while cleaning a fish tank.
