What is it?

England face Pakistan in the third of three Tests as the red-ball international summer comes to an end.

When is it?

The Test starts on Friday, August 21 at 11am (BST).

Where is it?

The game will be played at The Ageas Bowl in Southampton, where the international summer began back in July.

Who’s playing?

Given that just 134.3 overs were possible during the second Test, both teams could yet be unchanged after a low-key week in Southampton.

Pakistan will likely keep faith with their young attack of Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi, supported by Mohammad Abbas and spinner Yasir Shah. Any possible rotation has been eradicated by the lack of play in The Ageas Bowl.

There will be plenty of scrutiny on the display of captain Azhar Ali, whose position is under pressure after an uncertain series with the bat and as skipper. Alongside a return of 0, 18, and 20 in his three innings, he allowed a strong position in the first Test to slip, as England took a series lead which they still hold.

The hosts' bowling line-up has been under the microscope all summer but they too could keep faith with the same line-up. There will be plenty of attention on whether Jofra Archer or Mark Wood, the two extreme pace options in the squad, are recalled.

England have made no secret that building a strong battery of quicks will be key to their Ashes hopes in 2021-22, yet we saw neither of the express pacemen in the last Test.

One solution could be to leave out front-line spinner Dom Bess, with conditions on the south coast likely to be similar to last week. Chris Silverwood has stated that all options are being considered.

With Ben Stokes back in New Zealand, Zak Crawley is expected to remain at No.3, with captain Joe Root coming in at his preferred position at No.4.

Perhaps the most significant development since the second Test is the news that officials will be permitted to start a day's play at 10:30am if inclement weather disrupts proceedings again.

If overs are lost during the day then time can be made up at the start of the day, rather than at the end to ensure bad light doesn't disrupt play further. Play on day one will begin at the normal time of 11:00am.

England squad: Joe Root (c), James Anderson, Jofra Archer, Dominic Bess, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Zak Crawley, Sam Curran, Ollie Pope, Dom Sibley, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, James Bracey, Ben Foakes, Jack Leach, Olie Robinson

Pakistan squad: Azhar Ali, Babar Azam, Abid Ali, Asad Shafiq, Faheem Ashraf, Fawad Alam, Imam ul Haq, Imran Khan, Kashif Bhatti, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Rizwan, Naseem Shah, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shan Masood, Sohail Khan, Usman Shinwari, Wahab Riaz, Yasir Shah

What’s the weather forecast?

It might be another frustrating week at The Ageas Bowl. On day one, the Met Office have put a yellow weather warning in place, with high winds expected. Rain is likely on days two and five, but the skies are expected to be clear in between. Fingers crossed.
